Read Across America

Anyone else getting ready to celebrate 'Read Across America' at your school?  I sure am & here is what my school has planned:

MONDAY:
We usually start our week by celebrating Dr. Seuss' birthday. Each grade level decides what they will do in their classrooms to kick of the week. This is usually a rotation day and teachers rotate classes to participate in lots of different Seuss related activities that incorporate reading, writing, science & art.

TUESDAY:
We invite all district administrators to dress up in their favorite book character & read to different classes. The children LOVE this. Last year, I was Pete the Cat.  My superintendent was Pinkalicious. We had also had Curious George, Viola Swamp, Cat in the Hat and many more!

WEDNESDAY:
Teachers & students dress up as their favorite characters! With over 700 students and nearly 80 adults on campus; we see lots of book characters! This is a fun and exciting day. The students LOVE to tell everyone who they dressed up & why they chose that specific character.

THURSDAY:
The middle school theater department takes storybooks and turns them into plays to perform for my students. The middle school students have an opportunity to practice performing & to share the love of reading with the little ones.

FRIDAY:
All students get to go to the gym for literacy games. We have the most amazing PE teachers that I have ever seen of in elementary.  They have students from our 3 year old program to second grade playing games that are Seuss/book related!

I am super excited for this week! My principal intern has been working out all of the details & she has done a wonderful job! I will take pictures to post afterwards!

Happy Reading!!
